Have you ever noticed that we all have a peculiar pattern of communication? The way we articulate thoughts, craft sentences, and inflect messages reveal who we are. Communication traits are clustered around personality types. Let me give you a funny example of what I mean.

Pay attention to the masters of wisdom you know.  I take the examples from popular movies: Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series), Dumbledore (Harry Potter series), Mr. Miyagi (The Karate Kid series), Morpheus (The Matrix series), Yoda (Star Wars series), and Shaolin Master Po (Kung Fu Tv series).  They all exhibit introspective behavior and a cryptic manner of speaking.  Their personality type is introverted intuition.  It means they communicate with their auxiliary trait, either extraverted thinking or feeling.  These masters are cryptic because they struggle with communication, having difficulty interacting and clarifying the meaning of their deep insights.

On the opposite side, the extraverted personalities use their primary trait to communicate. Expression of thoughts, feelings, and experiences are more direct and transparent. In The Unconscious Skill: How To Prepare For An Adaptive Leadership Model, I explain this insight and what to do about it.

Our dialogues are full of misunderstandings, false interpretations, or, in some instances, malice.  Psychological type, instinct, and emotion unconsciously permeate dialogue, inducing us to say what we don’t hear or claim what we don’t do.  This is not a particularity of a group, culture, or character but a condition of human nature. Once you understand and practice active listening, dialogue may transform behavior and culture around you.
